Quake Addicts
This site is for the Quake addict in all of us. Quake, Quake II, Quake III, Quake IV and now QuakeZero. We are all id fans, so anything id goes. It's not a clan site, it's a site for us addicts to get together and post our thoughts and ideas about the games. If you have a clan with no home, we can add a forum section for you. All comers welcome. You can add your screen caps of that high score game so you have a place to show your friends. So come on in, and join the group, post in the Forum, and don't forget, admitting your addicted, is half the problem.

There are some write-ups at several different sites and a beta testing program you can sign up for at Quakelive.com I also found some screenshots at VoodooExtreme. Have a look and sign up for the beta program. If anyone gets into the beta program, I hope you come and update us all on the game and release date etc.

Quake Zero not actually in web-browser.
|
FTA, "Quake Zero has been billed as a free, browser-based game of Quake 3 Arena supported by advertising revenue, but those of you worried that it'll be written in Java or something can rest easy - id's Steve Nix tells us it just uses the browser to get going." Read the full article Here.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Demo is out.
|
Description from Gamers Hell. "The Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars(TM) PC Demo (Multiplayer & Single-Player) comes with the final version of Valley, one of the larger battlegrounds in the game. Set in Yosemite, California, Valley has the Global Defense Force on the attack, as they attempt to foil a Strogg contamination plot centering on a water treatment facility. Valley features a great blend of close quarters infantry action, vehicle battles and aircraft dogfights, and the varied terrain combining mountains, waterways, tunnels and industrial structures allows for many different playing styles. To top it all off, there's a multitude of optional side missions and plenty of opportunities to try out the various defense turrets, artillery and radar deployables - Valley is a prime example of the frantic and diverse action you'll find in Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars. The demo also features ETQW's bots, so you can explore the map and gameplay in single-player mode with computer-controlled opponents, or use the bots to fill up empty slots on multiplayer servers. We are also including the standalone server as well as the server launcher tool, so you can host your own online and LAN games."

Punkbuster installing services on your computer.
|
I hadn't played Quake3 in a while since I had issues with my computer. I recently upgraded My PC and decided to see how much I'd lost since the last time I played. I have a fresh install of Windows XP and I am keeping things running clean and smooth (not like my last install) by not installing every piece of crap that comes along. I had saved my Quake III directory so I wouldn't have to download all the maps and mods. I copied it back over and fired up the game. OK, I expected Punkbuster to have to update, but it was taking forever. I ran pbweb and in 30 seconds or so, I'm good to go. I play for a few games (I lost allot since I last played) and closed out the game. Now I'm installing my trusty Photoshop and check my startup items in msconfig. Photoshop has a bad habit of starting things with the system that run all the time. I don't like that. I want programs to start their stuff when I start it, not when they think it would be best. And in poking around to make sure I got everything, I find PnkBstrA.exe running in the background. I check my startup again, no, not there, so I check the services, and there it is. What the heck is this for. I do a Google search and find out that Punkbuster has started installing a service without notifying me. No warning, no "by the way", nothing. This is something I would think they should tell you. It HAS to be running to play, so it is sucking resources on my computer whether I'm playing or not. It runs 24/7 unless I want to go in and stop and start the service when I play. This sucks. Read their FAQ for the story they give about installing a service on your PC without your knowledge.
This may be old news to you Quake fans, but I haven't played in months, and it sure is news to me. Maybe there is a patch or hack out there so I can start it with the game and when I quit the game, the service will be stopped. This little pest is the kind of thing that killed my last install. Little gems that get installed without you knowing about it. I wonder if you un-installed Quake3 if this PB service would be removed also, or left behind. It is talking to it's server and "Updating" punkbuster. Hmm, what else is it doing?
