| OK, I don't know what I did, but I'm getting better FPS. I get about 35-45 in a crowd now so it plays allot better. Looks like crap, blurry and stuff, but thats ok. I need to find "force player model", I know that helped allot in quake3. And turn off the gibbs. That's another that helped allot. I'll just have to wait till everyone gets to playin around with the config and puts up a tweak guide, cuz I already had to reload defaults, cuz I killed it. I over-clocked my vid card and that helped a little. My wife won't let me spend the money on a new card, so I gotta work with what I got. |

Ya, I set the gamma in the config, I can never remember the commands to do it in the console. Also, your right, the physics are a little softer than quake3, but I think they are a hell of alot closer to Quake3 than any other game I've played. Some games the feel is so mushy that I just can't play. I think it's a perfect match though. Allot of peolpe are sooo used to that mushy feel, that they won't play quake3 cuz they can't hang. This I think will bring in more players cuz it's a mix that fits.
Now I just need the settings for the config to get my frame rate up in a crowd. Like force player model, no gibbs, simple items, and marks on walls off etc. I still like multi, I just get too much studder in crowds. |

One thing I did for the brightness is bring down the console (Ctrl+Alt+~) and change r_gamma to 2 instead of the default 1. It's a lot better at making the screen brighter and easier to see, than using the ingame menu brightness bar, or r_brightness 1.2 (default).
I think the physics of Q4 are similar to Q3A, but not exactly the same. Q3A physics were very "hard" and had a tight feel to me. Like cutting corners directly against walls, having no sliding or slippery feel. Q4 physics feel kind of "soft" to me, and doesn't have as tight of a feeling that Q3A had. The movement speed also feels a little bit slower too, but not as slow as Doom 3. |

Single player seems to run smooth no matter whats going on. Action all over and seems smooth. Multi runs smooth also if there is limited action. When I get in a crowd, it's get real jumpy. So bad it's hard to play. Might have been my ping, the only server I could find with players and an opening was a 120 ping. Maybe that was it. I had to play with the config to get the brightness up high enough for me. My setup has always been too dark. Maybe there will be some tweaks later that will help me with fps when in a crowd. I can't afford another vid card right now, so I'm stuck with what I got.
It was sweet though. Physics seem just like Quake3. I did some bunny hops and rocket jumps and it feels just like Quake3. Love it. Hope I can get it smoother so I can rock. |

Quake 4 is finally here. Once I got to open the box, I watched the DVD that had all the little goodies on it like game artwork, more clips, and little interviews from the makers. Then I installed Q2 for the hell of it. Then I finally installed Q4, and immediately played it online.
Multiplayer is awesome. They definately made some big improvements in the network coding from Doom 3 and Doom 3 Resurrection of Evil. Although, FPS is limited, since the game has such intense lighting and graphics. But from the 2 hours I spent playing it, the game is really fun. I found a server that was featuring DM, and the map we were playing on was the Team Arena version of q3tourney6 (the one with Xaero). Then the game mode switched to Tournament, and it was set up like a ladder brackets system. We were also playing on a very familiar map: q2dm1, which also happens to be ospdm1 for q3a. |
