>So where have you been toad? Working hard? What do you do for a living? I've been working some OT lately...did over 50 hours last week doing Tech Lead covering for my boss' vacation. Not so bad this week.
Ugh... believe it or not I'm a programmer (schooled as an elec geer, though). I come home from 10 hours over a hot monitor and lay into Quake. Mostly. Some days I can't do it anymore. I rest up by programming my own stuff. Then there is my (beautiful) wife and teenage son. We're getting a puppy in late November. But these distractions are cutting into my online time *sigh*. If only I had 6 more hours per day. Mmmm... I might be able to keep up...
>On the annoying Doom3/Q4 console default, add com_allowconsole "1" to your config. That should set it back to normal. Also, con_speed "9999" will speed up the console. fov is g_fov...what else....listcmds and listcvars to find more. I need to develop my q4 config.
WHOA! Exxxxxcellent. Thx. (more... more!)
>Well Toad, I'm not sure what I have in mind on the hardware shopping front. Part of me wants to build another high end machine and the other part wants to go budget. I'm definately going AMD though.
Mmmmm... I'm running an AMD 2.2GHz. I have had AMD for my last 3 computers. Thinking of wandering over to Intel for my next box. I like to buy tech that is juuuust behind the curve - best economics. Thus I just picked up an ATI 9800 Pro 128M vcard and bumped up my memory to 1Gig (ok ok... so the vcard is a little further back from the front of the pack now . Also I slurged on a silent ps and got an excellent cpu heatsink/fan system. I used to run reeeeelly hot (I actually saw 71c once!). It sits down at 51c -ish now. But I think I'm still cpu limited (for Q4). I'm running 800x600 at medium quality but things get googly when things get busy (with more than 2 other players).
Dude, spend the money and get performance. You'll *always* regret the non-performance choice. Trust me. It's only money. |

Quake 4 does have a different feel to me than Quake 3 Arena did. I'm still just adjusting to the Q4 physics. I find myself having to be more careful when making flag runs, especially on the map q4ctf3. I actually have to slow down when I am bringing the enemy flag to my base when jumping from the shotgun, through the yellow armor floating in the air, past the bounce pad, to my flag. Because if I go full speed, my jumps are not timed well, and I fall into the void.
The Nailgun is actually one of the weapons in the game that I hate. It feels like the rate of fire for that thing is too slow, and I hate how the nails hurt you like a rocket splash close to you would.
One nice change I find that I like very much in Q4 is that the movement is a tad-bit slower. Especially strafing side to side while in the air after using a bounce/jump pad. Now people are easier to hit. Like on the remake map of q3dm17, when I grab the railgun, I miss far less often than I did in Q3A. |

Either Q4 screws up my Q3 skills, or the performance difference is throwing me off. It takes me some time to reacclimate myself when I switch back. I've been playing both everyday. When I can't take the framerate anymore, I start to play Q3.
Hey the nailgun is too cool! I love how it has a flak radius from the target surface...pretty sweet!
I haven't even started single player yet. In fact, I haven't tried DM yet...just been playing CTF
I'd like to play some games with Gomes and gang, but after I build my box. |

Yea, Escaped Turkey went offline about two weeks before the release of Quake 4. I'm not sure if ET did that because he's going to reserve those servers for Q4, or if he's done hosting game servers.
As far as Quake 3 Arena, I havn't touched it since Quake 4 came out. But I might go back every once in a while and play a couple games with some friends that are still back there in the Q3A world.
Gomes/Jordon.p might already be in Quake 4 now. I havn't seen him yet. However, I did see a Team Pinnacle server up about a week ago, which is his ".p" clan. |

>TOADY! Long time no see. Shocked.
YO! I've been wondering where you guys all ran off to. I (eventually) found Fragmasters where I pinged sub-50. This was heaven. All I had to do was point and shoot. It's OSP and it took some getting used to but I think osp has screwed up my baseq3 game
I'd recently taken to calling myself TommyGunToad because I was becoming a master with the mg. I *LUV* the mg. But more and more I can't find Fragmasters.
So I started hanging out at EscapedTurkey. Poof! It's gone! Is it me?
When I found that Q4 was out I ran out to get it (although methinks I be sleeping for a week or so) and installed it 2 nights ago. Last night I played for a couple of hours and even started the Single Player game.
My first impressions aren't too different from what I've been reading. It's awesomely beautiful (in a horrific sort of way;) but my eyes go all googly and my frame rate goes to hell when there are more than just a few players. I have much tweaking to do. I haven't found CTF yet and have enjoyed some of the FFA but I'm still just getting kicked around alot.
So I started up the Single Player game and I have to say, regardless of what you've read in all those reviews, it is impressive. I played until that giant Strogg with the blade arm ran me through. Very very enjoyable death.
As to the server browser I'm still trying to figure out things like how NOT to have it do a rescan automatically every time.
And the console? What's with the CTL+ALT+~ ?? Oh yeah, *this* is a convenient keystroke!
So, yeah, I'm very much a Q4 noob (heck, I give myself a 6 out of 10 compared to some of you guys) and there's lots to learn here.
I look forward to finding you guys around somewhere (Q4 space, probably now) and being more than just your target. I"m not saying that I could beat anyone here but I could at least not SUCK so bad, especially if I could ping sub-130. Ahhhh to ping sub-50. Hey, (sry for the stream-o-consciousness) I found a Q4 server that advertised a 28 ping to me. TWENTY-EIGHT ping? Holy Crap! I don't ping that low on my *own* machine!!!
However, it was vacant. And when someone did show up guess what happened to the lag?
So, Mang, tell me about your hardware shopping. What have you in mind?
Insex, are you playing nightly? Have you given up on q3 now?
<giggle> So how long have we got before Jordan and disciples switch over? <giggle> |

TOADY! Long time no see.
Hey I got Q4 too. I've attempted to play online but my frame rate goes sub 10 to nil in the middle of some ctf maps...still fun though. I'm planning out my new box.
The built in server browser really does suck. You can't page down or anything close and are forced to grab the scroll bar and drag it sparingly. I'm kinda disappointed at the high number(3) of automatic machinegun-like weapons, as well as the slower rocket speed. Only 4 ctf maps? I like the maps though. One reminds me of Laser Tag back in the 1980s. Another reminds me of the original Jedi Knight game from back in the Doom era. Just wanted to air out my first impressions. Don't get me wrong, I like the game (or I wouldn't be planning out a new box right now). I'll get a better feel for the game when I can actually move around competitively.

Mine came in 2 DVDs. I guess it was because I got the Special Collector's Edition.
Finding good CTF servers is a rarity in Q4. Most of the servers that I ping well at rotate the game modes. One day they're a DM server, the next day they're a CTF server.
The All-Seeing Eye still hasn't updated their server browser to find Quake 4 servers yet. So we'll all have to wait a little longer until we can use ASE for Q4. |

OMG! This game comes on FOUR cds? Yeesh.
Ran out last night and picked up Q4 and then played until my eyes bled. This higher res game is certainly more punishing on the eyes, no?
Well, it looks awesome. I just found sites with FFA so I ran around and got slaughtered mostly. Oh, that's Multiplayer, of course. I'm not much interested in Single Player. Doom3 didn't really do it for me.
Oh, and I need a faster cpu. My AMD 2.2 is maxing out. I just got an ATI 9800 Pro (128Mram) and I hope that's enough for awhile. I think my bottle neck is the Mobo/cpu/ddr-ram.
Thsi morning I logged on and specifically looked for CTF. The ping times all showed 300+ (many in the 400's). What gives? Was this game first released in Europe? Mmmm... better check out that All Seeing Eye thingie.
