Well, I thought I had it fixed, but it started again. The pc would shut off from overheating. So I went out and bought a new heatsink/fan and got it taken care of once and for all. (fingers crossed) Not sure why the one I had for about 2 years all of a sudden wasn't up to the task, but it's running allot cooler and I think thats it. I bought an off brand one, cuz it's hard to find a good one for an athlon xp socket A, without ordering it. Everything on the shelves is for the newer cpu's. I couldn't wait for an order, I needed it 'now", lol.

Now that you mention it, I think I've pulled CPUs out of systems that had the sticker on the underside. Hmmm.

Thanks for the Sandra link. All this time I thought you had to pay for it; I didn't know there was a free version. Now I have a new toy.

Well, the price tag was on the back of the cpu, not in between the cpu and heatsink. I would think that it would act like insulation on the back of the chip and hold the heat in. They were idiots, but not that bad. LOL.

And yes, I used arctic silver. I had bought a tube a while back and have taken good care of it. Damn little tube about the size of a 1 inch long pencil cost 8 bucks. Used it once and thought, crap, I'm saving this. So I was prepared. I've run 3dMark and other benkmarking programs to push it and then check the temp, and it's runnin cool. No problems now.

BTW, you can check out everything about your PC with a program called <a href="http://www.sisoftware.net/index.html?dir=dload&location=sware_dl_3264&langx=en&a="> Sandra Lite</a> It will tell you everything, even the serial number on the chip. You can use it to see if your mobo has support for cpu temp. I love it, it has so much detail about everything.

Wow that's BAD. Even the slightest amount of dust/oil on the head of the chip itself can raise temps, but to have a price sticker on there...I'm surprised it still works.

I can't check my CPU temp since there is no sensor on it, but my system temp on the mobo sensor comes in at 93F degrees. There is no dust in my system. I blocked any of the manufacturing holes in the case so that all air would be forced through a large filter.

Did you use Arctic Silver?

It's funny you just mentioned this, because I just got done reading in the Windows XP Tweaking Guide that you posted a few days ago that talks about hardware maintainence (like checking your CPU temperature). He mentioned that you could download programs that can check the temperature of your CPU.

Well, my PC was freakin out for the last few months. It would just shut off and make a high/low beeping sound. I unplug the power cord and reconnect, and it would be fine. It would do this a couple times a week. Not a big deal, but annoying as hell. Seemed to happen when I was doing something that, if it died I would be more pissed off than normal.

Anyways, I finally had enough and decided I had to fix it. Did a quick google search and found out the beeping was a beep code from the bios letting me know the proccesor was overheating. Dohhhh. Why it never occured to me to check the beep codes for the bios is beyond me. I assumed since unpluging the power cord fixed it, that it had something to do with the power supply.

So, since it worked fine most of the time, I thought I'd do some checks to see what was going on. I have a program that will tell you the cpu temp, so I ran that. It came back with 72.5c-162.5f. Holly crap!!! I looked on some overclocking forums and pretty much the common thought is that 155f is about as high as you would ever want to go for fear of damage. People have gone higher pushing the cpu to the max, but mine was at stock.

I tear the pc apart and figure I'll pull the cpu, clean all the gunk off and reset with new thermal paste and see if that helps. Guess what I found. The bastards that mounted the proc and heat sink for me when I bought the mobo/cpu combo didn't remove the sticker off the back of the processor. It was like one of those price tag stickers you see in the stores, but had like the stocking number or something. I cleaned it off with some laquer thinner (since it was melted and burned on) and reset the proc and heatsink with some new thermal paste.

Now I'm runnin cool. 51c-123f. So, maybe the sticker, the little bit of dust stuck in the fins of the cooler, and the old dried out paste together were making it run that hot. I am going to keep a little closer eye on it from now on. I don't want to kill my baby before I have the means to upgrade. That would be close to the end of the world to kill it and not have the money to fix it.

Moral of the story, check your temps every now and then!
