That sounds pretty cool. There is also a linux router called FREESCO that boots and runs from a floppy. Too cool.

So anyways, I'm at work Tuesday checking the newegg page now and then to see if the new Asus mobo comes in. I get back from lunch at 12:30, hit refresh on my laptop, and the "Add to Cart" button is lit up! I add it, proceed to check-out, and after entering credit card info I hit next, only to find the item is removed from my cart due to lack of stock. They sold out while I checked-out. I'll have to try again the 22nd.
Oh, I'm getting another monitor. It's a used Dell black 21" Trinitron with dual inputs and front input switching for only 35 bucks. It's an excessed Boeing asset. Maybe I'll run a Freesco router on input #2 |

| If you don't have a HD to stick in to get it going, you could always try a live cd of some linux flavor. I read somewhere that someone tweaked a windows XP disc to live boot. I use them to see what a linux distro is all about. Pretty damn cool to stick in a disc and have linux running in a few minutes, then reboot and your back to whatever was there before. They run all in memory and never touch the HD. Might work to see if everything else works. |

Yeah, the freebie system would make a great file server. The 30 gig drive I threw in seems to be toast and won't format...hmmm.

I don't know if this is the slowest the new Asus SLI board will take but it's the cheapest socket 939 newegg has in stock...135 bucks:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103537
It appears SLI starts with the gforce 6600 series. They range from 83 for vanilla to 179 bucks for GT series. The GTs are typically about 150 bucks.
I might do the same thing with the hard disks...toss in something that works, then when I max the CPU and vid cards later, the WD Raptors will probably be available in a larger capacity. Buy and RAID them at that time, and ride this system out for many more years. It should get me through RTC Wolfenstein 3, Doom 4, Quake 5, and anything else... hahah |

Not a bad little box you picked up. If it won't play the games, it'd work nice as file storage box. I have an old duron 750 box that I stuff a couple of 80 gig drives in and just use it for storage. Hell it hasn't been on in about 4 months, but I know my shit is there and safe. I hate it when you find that awesome little program or mod for a game, then you reformat and re-install and you can't find it anymore, or now they want you to pay for it. Real handy to have copies. Plus I dual boot it as linux and anything else I want to play with. Right now it boots XP, BeOs and Mandrake linux.
Now that Mobo you got picked out, Daaaaaaaamn, thats a sweety. I noticed a typo in the specs. It says "onboard video"=no then on outputs on mobo it says "vga"=1, lol. Now whats the slowest cpu gonna cost to go in there. They are still up there aren't they? I know the sli vid cards are real cheap now, but the cpu's are still up there. I wish I had choices like that to make.
Good luck on getting a gamer machine goin, I envy the choices you'll have to make. |

I waited for my nephew on Sunday, but he never showed up. I got anxious so I called him, drove to UCI and picked it up Sunday night so I could work on it during the week. It's in pieces on the dining room table. I'm throwing it together right now...
I'll post the specs in a few hours...
Edit:
ok, here it is...
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
768 MB RAM
DRAM Clock: 266 MHz PC2100
CPU Real Clock: 1666 MHz (133x12.5), FSB 266
My nephew had it overclocked to over 2.1 GHz when I first powered it up. I just flashed the BIOS and will probably leave it at stock speeds. The cooling situation sucks. Time to load XP and Q4 for a test run.
Not sure what the video card is...nvidia something. The fan on the video chipset is totally seized, lol. This board has ATA RAID, as well as SATA drive support. I threw in a 30 gb hdd and a nic. The built in nic shares with the AGP so I disabled it. System came with SB Live w/drive bay. What else...fanless PSU. I can't tell if this computer is even on, it's so quiet. I may just pass it on to a friend who has a worse computer than me and I'll build a new system based on this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131568
This thing has dual 16x PCIe slots.
My thoughts are go killer board and killer ram, slowest CPU and slowest vid cards that will go SLI (gotta test SLI while mobo is new in case it is a defective board). Since new CPUs and vid cards will keep coming out for this, you max the board when the last cpu for it hits market, then throw in 2 of the fastest vid cards at that time. Not much money lost in the initial purchase. The initial purchase will still be blazing fast for what I'm used to and will be future proof for a long time. I'd hate to spend more on a CPU and vid cards then the minimum possible, knowing it's going to be replaced again...know what I mean? I'm guessing it's probably another 6 yr system like my old one. Socket 939 will be around awhile. With this particular mobo, it seems like the right time to build. And, Asus has had plenty of time to get any bugs out of their SLI boards and perfect them through hardware revisions.
Any thoughts?
I'm tired of not being able to use a railgun in Q4 due to my framerate! |

ooo, ooo, I got old computers to trade in for ones like that. You lucky bastard. Hope it works out for ya. Gotta have a machine that will play these newer games. I'm about on the edge. It's getting close to new video card time, but thats money I don't have right now. Good luck getting one together. |

| My nephew takes computer donations that he and his wife send to the needy in Mexico. He just got one that was too good to give up so he's giving it to me in exchange for one of my older computers. The one I'm getting is a socket A system and probably AGP 8x. That should get me by for awhile and keep me from blowing thousands of dollars. I should have it tomorrow and I'll post the details. |
