The fun continues Smile Got mem from friend and now I'm using 768mb ram cas 2 ( 2-2-2-8 ).

==
Benchmarks for my pathetic system:

Gforce2 mx440 (64 meg, clock: 233 core, 366 memory)
Lowest settings @ 640x480, with Upset Chaps fastest config
latest nvidia drivers for respective os

-Win98se = 18.4 fps
-WinXP Pro = 19.9 fps
There's that slight improvement we read about...not sure if it's more the nvidia XP drivers or just WinXP itself; maybe both? Onward...

with Gforce3 Ti500 (64 meg, clock: 252 core, 525 memory):
-WinXP Pro = 33.8 fps
==

The verdict is that I can play low quality with the eye candy on at 800x600. Still looks GREAT. Not bad at all for a 5 year old system. I'm in the Delta Labs getting the reactor back online. Need to rebind my chainsaw so I can pull it out on the charging whip soldiers. I crouch and aim it high like a spear into a charging horseman Smile

Ya, it was my first and ONLY run. LOL. So I ran some more today and, your right, toss that first one for sure. My fps's this time were for a 3 test run. 44.5, 46.9, and 46.7. So I guess I'm running at about 46fps. Not bad, but I'm running on medium quality. Maybe with more memory I can bump it up a bit. I have an Athlon xp2400, so that should be fine, although faster is always better. And the ATI 9800pro. So I'm thinking my memory is the bottle neck, but who knows.

So get your ass in gear, and get that system goin so you can play this biotch!!

Well, I know it runs like crap the first time as it has to cache the textures or something like that. That score gets tossed. The second run of the timedemo is the smooth one that counts for your system.

Was your score the first run?

Ya I guess you don't have enough. After playing awhile your hard disk probably begins to thrash. I hate that.

Hey, I just ran timedemo demo1, and I get 41.4 fps. I never could get it to work before. Looks like crap, kinda freezes in places, but I think I just need more memory. I only have 512, should have a gig. BTW I sent you a PM, but you prob already read it. Good luck getting a doomputer together, the game is sweet....

LOL

My old system here just benchmarked 18.4 fps in demo1! That's the best I can do so far. I had to set agressive memory timings, oc the gforce 2, set the nvidia driver to best performance, go low quality 640x480, turn off all eye candy, and use a special config. Kinda fun and sad at the same time. I'll have to try again in Winxp this week. $55 benchmark software.

I just solved the problem with my buddy's computer by upping his voltages 5%. Crappy power supply. I'll Doom on his box now before I have to give it back.

I'm still going to stuff his vid card in my system and see what kind of benchmark a halfway decent card gives me...when I find the time.

None at Cuircut City, or Fry's, checking Best Buy now. This is kinda easy, I have my wife running around and checking in by cellphone. Think Best buy will be the last try for today. I thought it would be easy for the first few days till news got out that it was in, but I guessed wrong.

(update) Got it, it's on it's way home. Thank you, Best Buy!!

Ah bummer. I'll bet Fry's and Best Buy still have copies.

Good luck.

Yeah, maybe it is possible. I was thinking the system bus and ram would be serious bottlenecks. I might have to do a lot of cvar tweaking.

(I managed to scrounge up an AMD Athlon 2400+ and a Gforce 3. I'll have to buy a motherboard and ram and I'm good to go.)

Well, thats not a bad setup, I can see how that would have been the shits when you built it.

I would say you really need a video card and see what happens. My guess would be that the game would run fine on your rig with a better card. I may be wrong but I remember something about the game being scalable. That it runs smooth, just toned down.

Good luck.

MY current system is the one I built in mid '99 for Quake 3. It started as a P2-450, but I was able to upgrade it to a celeron 1.4. The bus only overclocks to 112mhz so it's at 1.567 mhz. It's still running the original 10k rpm ultra2 scsi drive from when I built it and has been upgraded from a TNT2 Ultra to a GForce 2. Hell, it's still running Win98se. I'm going to have this BX chipset system bronzed for lasting so long.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for at the moment. Haven't been able to contact some people yet. But....

HEY, I just got DooM 3 and a free Hell Knight figurine. GameStop in Norwalk started selling the game at 7pm tonight. They close at 9 or 10. I have my buddy's fast computer here so I'm going to hook it up to the 5.1 in the living room.

I'm breakin out the snacks cause I'm pullin an all-nighter!
I better take clean underwear with me...I may need it.

Sorry, but thats about all I know about. I've got a few pieces laying around, but don't really want to part with them. So what is your system now? What are you looking for?

Yaaaaaa....I like Fry's but I can't afford anything remotely close to a retail price until I find a job, but thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking more along the lines of a surplus outlet with refurbished/old items at thrift store prices. There used to be one in Costa Mesa on Fairview. It may have shut down.

Good news: I may have scrounged up some ram.

Fry's is the only place to shop. Just look at the adds in the paper and wait for what you want to go on-sale. I picked up a mobo cpu for 80 bucks. An Athlon xp2600 with an ECS mobo (not the best , but for my kids pc it works great). They have a website but the prices aren't the same as in-store. They are a bit cheaper on-line but you have to pay shipping so it's better to go to the store if you can. www.Outpost.com is the site, check it out.

If you guys (and gal Wink ) know any good used PC parts places in L.A./Orange counties let me know. Also, any online clearing houses such as compgeeks.com.

I just created the "Help Rob Play DooM3" hardware list and I'm gathering my resources. I figure I can almost piece together a playable system if I call enough friends that have stuff lying around. I already know some of what they have without calling them yet. My goal is to spend nada(wishful thinking.) The most difficult to scrounge up will be the mobo and ram.

Wish me luck,
