| I'll make that change to my mIRC favorites list when I get a chance to play. I've been so busy lately with school, work outs, and mostly my two jobs. I must have spent 10 hours last week drawing the building plans for a house with added extensions. By the way, I like the CTFWest site, did you make it? If that's your work, then I have to say good job. I'm currently working on a site too if you want to see it at http://host.freeprofessionalhosting.com/~admin127/ if you want to see it. |

c2_platinum is a great place for pickups, love my 30 ping there hehehe...
we had to abandon #ctfpickup.west because the etg admins had a problem registering that name.. the channel is now #ctfwest
the westbot is now back in the channel and ready to setup games so you dont have to wait in an empty server forever to get one going on a western server. type !add in the channel to sign up for the game, !remove if you have to leave and it will message you when 7 other people have signed up.
any more info you need can be found at http://ctfwest.tripod.com/ |

| Yea, the competition is definately thick in pickup games. One thing that is required is teamwork, and lot's of it. You have to constantly think about your other teammates before yourself. Like when you see some available armor in your base, and your supposed to be on offense, you should leave that armor for your defenders rather than take it like in public servers. Or when you and a teammate are in the enemy base and you see some megahealth, but your teammate has Quad Damage, instead of taking the megahealth for yourself, you should let your teammate with Quad Damage take it. You have to constantly think on the fly. It's things like this that will dictate whether team captains will pick you or not. |

Just got done playin a pickup game there. Nice feel to the server, no lagg, but I can tell I need an osp config. Competition is stiff to. I like that. They just don't play allot on my map, ctf4, I'll have to make it a frequent stop.

| Just to keep you guys informed on the pickup scene. A lot of the regulars at the Gamecloud servers have been missing in action. Mostly due to the new game that came out, World of Warcraft. At the same time, the few guys that do show up are kind of pissy about all the other guys that play at Quake n' Weed. So the pickup scene has been mostly dead at the Gamecloud servers, which is a shame. However most of the CTF Pickup action has been going on at the c2.platinum_ server ip: 67.19.47.111:27960. So if any of you in here are really interested in participating in some competitive, organized, and fun CTF action, stop by the c2.platinum_ server. There's a pickup game going on at almost every time of the day/evening, and all the server settings seem to be the same with the competition/tournament style settings, except for the weapon respawn time which is 2 seconds instead of 5. |

Same thing, but no anoying pop-up asking for money. Plus you can add as many buddies as you like to the buddies list. When yo start it up you can see if they are playing a game. It also has a rcon console for admining a server if you have one, and allot of other useless things. It was 10 bucks a year or 30 bucks for life, ( I assume life of the company and not me) But I figured what the hell, 30 bucks ain't bad.

| So you actually paid for ASE? Well, I guess those guys do deserve some money for the good work they did. But I ain't going to pay money for software that I am allowed to download and use for free. By the way, what's the "paid" version of the All-Seeing Eye like? |

We need to adopt an osp server and take it over (so to speak). One on the west coast, that we all get a good ping to and just head there when we want to play. I wish it could be like the old days, when you could just go to TP or Crom's and be assured of a good game. It seems that baseq3 is full of noobs most of the time and that osp is empty most of the time. I payed for the lifetime licsense for All Seeing Eye so I can add as many buddies as I like, but no-one's out there, . I just end up looking for a server with players. Oh well, I play when I can and play where there is players. I do my best.

| Pickup games go on all day in Texas, Chicago, and the East Coast. You'll be sure to find a CTF pickup game on any of the Gamecloud.com servers (Those servers used to be Speakeasy.net servers). So if you work nights, and you really want to get in a pickup game, check out the East Coast and Central zone Gamecloud.com servers in the afternoon. I just think it would be great if there were some more CTF pickup action here on the West Coast so that we can play with people in our area, and that we could ping well. East Coast ping really blows, and East Coast players give you all kind of trash talk for it. |

I'm game, it's just that I work nights, so it's not easy to hook up with everyone. I play in the early afternoon and then after 1am at night. I'll get in the pickup channel on irc when I can and see what happens.

P.S. Nice flick, I downloaded and it was cool. |

great idea Insex!
ive been thinking the same thing really, im in texas so im more central then west, but it is a shame to see that the many good west players who have to play with high pings.
if you use irc, idle at #ctfwest on enterthegame, its a new channel and if we get enough people we can request echbot, which is a bot that can setup games and choose captains so people dont have to wait in a server to get a game going. after 8 people type !add in the irc channel then the bot can message everyone and tell them the game is ready to start. it works very nice as long as people dont sign up for games and go afk without typing !remove so the bot knows that you no longer want to play.
anyone whos interested in seeing the basics of pickup ctf should check out the movie p0wned |

Hi fellow Quakers. I've been thinking for a while how great it would be to get some Q3A pickup games started on the West Coast. As some of you Q3A Veteran's may be familiar with, Q3A is almost dead here on the West Coast. I think one way to get the Q3A community on the West Coast back into shape is to have pickup games.
Whenever I look for servers to play on, I have two choices: if I want good to average ping I usually have to settle for a server with newbies in it (CROM's and EscapedTurkey for example). However, If I'm looking for a competitive and organized match with players that actually respect the game of CTF and know the difference between a skilled player and a hacker/cheater, then I usually have to settle for Texas, Chicago, and East Coast servers, where my ping is from average to poor, most of the time it's poor ping. The Q3A communities in Texas, Chicago, and especially the East Coast from New York to Florida are very close-knit and active communities. One reason why is because they have lot's of pickup games. Another reason why is because they keep-in-touch with each other by using mIRC. Whenever a Q3A player turns on their computer, they log on a game channel on mIRC and whenever people want to start a pickup game or scrimmage, they spam in the channel and people who are interested come to the server.
Here on the West Coast, I feel that people are very isolated from each other. People just use the default Q3A server browser and join any server that has people in it. Instead, it would be better if people contacted each other, and when enough people are ready to play, they start a game at an empty server. So if my proposition interests you, then go to www.udpsoft.com/eye and download The All-Seeing Eye which is a much better server browser, it doesn't cost a penny and you don't have to register it. Then go to www.mirc.com and download mIRC, again it doesn't cost a penny and you don't have to register it. Once you install mIRC, connect to the server "EntertheGame" and join the channel "#ctfpickup" without the quotes on both of them. Once you familiarize yourself with mIRC, you will find out about other channels people hang out at to start pickup games.
Pickup games are really the best way to play Q3A, especially if you like to have even and fair teams throughout a match. If you don't know what a pickup game is, I'll explain it in a nutshell:
1. First, everyone spectates and two captains join the game each on different teams. There is no voting for who becomes a captain, but a captain should be someone that knows most of the people in the server.
2. The captains then whip out their gauntlets and pummel each other to the death in the middle of the map, each has to have the same amout of health/armor at the beginning of the pummeling and not grab any additional health/armor or powerups during the pummeling.
3. Whoever wins, gets to pick their first teammate. Then the loser picks their first teammate, and then winner picks again and so on. The picking usually stops until it's 5v5, like a Basketball pickup game.
4. Eveyone then votes on what map will be played (\callvote map q3ctf3). In teamchat, each teammate decides what the gameplan will be (who will defend the flag, who will defend high, who will get middle, who will go on offense). When everyone is ready, the game begins. If someone has to leave in the middle of the game, then a spectator takes their place. Pickup games are usually set to the standard professional way of match play, which is 20 minutes long with no capture limit.
5. When the game is finished after 20 minutes (or whenever if it goes into overtime) then repeat step 1.
Of course, it is best to play pickup games on OSP servers since there is more control in OSP servers. Like locking both teams when a match begins to keep newbies from jumping-in during the match. This means that people need the OSP mode for Q3A, and since Threewave maps are very popular in pickup games, downloading the Q3A Threewave mod is a neccessity too.
The positive aspects of CTF pickup games is that the teams are even, and you don't have people leaving or joining in the middle of a game and making the teams unbalanced and unfair. Which makes the game fair for everyone. No more "I have 100 points, I own you all" when it was 9v6 half the time. Pickup games are also good places to meet new friends and make the game of Q3A CTF more fun and rewarding to play. The only negative aspect of pickup games is that people who are not that good at Q3A or people with high ping usually don't get picked very often. That is why it is not only the captain's responsibility to not only know the people in the server, but to also make sure that people who have spectated a game or more get picked also.
When I play pickup games in Chicago and the East Coast, I don't have good ping and it is tough to play with 90+ ping. So I don't get picked much. However, after a while when Gomes and I were at a New York server, we convinced some East Coast players to come to the Gamecloud LAX server. About ten people including Gomes and I were playing pickup games for about four hours. Gomes and I were thinking about how great it would be if we could get pickup games like this started all the time at West Coast servers. Occasionally I see some good players that could definately play in pickup games at some of the newbie servers like CROM's and EscapedTurkey. I do see a lot of good players that could play in pickup games at the Team {BC} servers in LA and Washington. It would be amazing if we could get all these people to group up together and make the West Coast a powerhouse for Q3A CTF again like it used to be, and to stop giving the West Coast a bad rep to cocky East Coast players who just rat on the West Coast. Your thoughts and feedback would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking that if enough people are interested in this idea and dedicated enough to stick with it, that we could start pickup games on Sunday nights or whenever possible. Thanks for taking the time for reading this post. |
