Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Demo is out.

Description from Gamers Hell. "The Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars(TM) PC Demo (Multiplayer & Single-Player) comes with the final version of Valley, one of the larger battlegrounds in the game. Set in Yosemite, California, Valley has the Global Defense Force on the attack, as they attempt to foil a Strogg contamination plot centering on a water treatment facility. Valley features a great blend of close quarters infantry action, vehicle battles and aircraft dogfights, and the varied terrain combining mountains, waterways, tunnels and industrial structures allows for many different playing styles. To top it all off, there's a multitude of optional side missions and plenty of opportunities to try out the various defense turrets, artillery and radar deployables - Valley is a prime example of the frantic and diverse action you'll find in Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars. The demo also features ETQW's bots, so you can explore the map and gameplay in single-player mode with computer-controlled opponents, or use the bots to fill up empty slots on multiplayer servers. We are also including the standalone server as well as the server launcher tool, so you can host your own online and LAN games."

Punkbuster installing services on your computer.

I hadn't played Quake3 in a while since I had issues with my computer. I recently upgraded My PC and decided to see how much I'd lost since the last time I played. I have a fresh install of Windows XP and I am keeping things running clean and smooth (not like my last install) by not installing every piece of crap that comes along. I had saved my Quake III directory so I wouldn't have to download all the maps and mods. I copied it back over and fired up the game. OK, I expected Punkbuster to have to update, but it was taking forever. I ran pbweb and in 30 seconds or so, I'm good to go. I play for a few games (I lost allot since I last played) and closed out the game.

Quake Zero

Quake Zero Unveiled [August 04, 2007, 11:19 am ET] - Viewing Comments
Eurogamer has word on another revelation from last night's QuakeCon keynote, as id Software reveals plans for Quake Zero, a web-based variation on Quake III Arena that will be supported by advertising. This is described by John Carmack as an "experimental" project, but could lead to a second team working on a tech5-based Quake game. There's more about this on Kotaku, where Todd Hollenshead admits some of the motivation for such a project is to regain some of id's preeminence in the world of competitive online gaming, and a browser-based shooter should allow access to the game for almost anyone with a computer.

City council vs CentOS

OK, not Quake related, but a good read none the less. It lets you know that "people" are the best tech out there. If you know something, you are valuable. It's the e-mail correspondence between a City councilman and the CentOS operating systems representative. CentOS offers free webserver operating system's with apache. It is the OS behind allot of websites and turns out, the city of Tuttle, Oklahoma's website. When the site went down, it displayed the default page when there is nothing on the server, so the City councilman started an e-mail exchange that is classic. Read them HERE, it's worth the read.

A link to John Carmack's QuakeCon 2006 keynote speech. "It was comparable to his down to earth speech presented last year when he focused on next generation console gaming. This year, he focused on multi-processor support in games. This video includes 1 hour and 20 minutes of Carmack's address. Sit back and relax and prepare to be blown away by the genius mind of the QUAKE creator himself, John Carmack. Watch it Here. (not the complete speech)

The shareware 0.91 version of Quake was uploaded to cdrom.com on June 22, 1996. You can read the "Announcement" here. The download was 7, 1.44MB floppy disk images. Needless to say it was an initial disappointment due to the lack of fast enough PC's. One funny read is the newsgroups, where everyone is expressing their grief about the slow fps on thier 386 and 486's. Have a humorous read here. Also, you can read the history of the Quake series from 1996 to 2001 here. Long live the king!!

The State of Cheating in Online Multiplayer Games

Exploring cheating in online multiplayer games. An interesting article about the trends and affects of cheating. From the article.. "Anyone who has played a game online has encountered a person who was cheating; whether they were aware of it or not. If the game does not include some form of anti-cheat then the chances of cheaters more than triples." The part that interested me was.. "In the online MP arena some people get a little paranoid; people who are otherwise rational people begin to think everyone who is better or scoring more points than them, is cheating." Read the full article here.

Physics in your PC games. The AGEIA-Havok Debate

Physics in your PC games. From the article "How much interaction do you want in your PC games? It used to be that graphics were the number one factor in picking up a new game but now players are asking more and more about interactions in the environment.
One company that has provided such interaction is Havok who developed a physics engine that has been used in a ton of games, including most famously in Valve's first person shooter Half-Life 2....
In the other corner we have AGEIA which has its own physics software engine, the PhysX API, but is also pushing their own enhancement called the PhysX physics processing chip....AGEIA entry is UbiSoft's latest military tactical shooter Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter."

First stand alone game based on the Quake 3 engine.

The first stand alone game based on the recently released quake3 game engine has been released. Allot of work has gone into this new game. I haven't tried it out but screen shots look good.

The game is called Tremulous, which is a hybrid first-person shooter/real-time strategy game featuring teams of aliens and humans. "The object of the game is to wipe out the opposing team's spawn points and all of their players. Both teams may build new spawn points and other structures by spending "build points" that are pooled together for a team and are recovered only when a structure is destroyed." (from the quick start guide). Sounds interesting if your into the strategy type game and still want the first person shooter action. Check it out here.

No fixes for the game itself, aparently, at least not listed in the official release. You can check out a performance comparison with the original game vs the patched game at Phoronix.com. Read it HERE. By thier tests, it slows down the fps slightly, but they say worth the improvements. Sort of.
